About
Soapstone
Soapstone (or steatite) is a metamorphic rock characterized by
its principal mineral, talc, which gives it a ‘soapy’ feel. The
stone also contains varying measures of chlorite, mica,
tremolite, quartz, magnetite, and iron compounds. Mined
world-wide, the chief soapstone deposits of commercial
importance are in Canada, northern Europe and the United States.
Because of its resistance to heat, talc was historically used in
the manufacture of pottery. Native North Americans also
traditionally used soapstone to create cooking bowls, ceremonial
pipes and
amulets. Today, sculptors prize soapstone for its
immense colour range, lustrous grain and ease of workability.
Each carving created by Peter Muckenheim respects the time-honoured
tradition of soapstone sculpting. The grain, colour and finish
make every piece an original and one you will be proud to own!
